WordCamp Vancouver 2013 Coming August 17

The world-famous geekout that is WordCamp Vancouver is coming back on August 17 and this year it will be held at the centrally-located BCIT Downtown Campus.

According to WordCamp Central, “WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress, the free and open source personal publishing software that powers over 25 million sites on the web.”

This year, WordCamp Vancouver is organized by Joey Kudish, Jill Binder, and Flynn O’Connor.

And, again this year, I will be presenting.

I think mine is the only Beginners session in the bunch, speaking on WordPress in 10 Steps, the content of which is part of my 10-part blog series titled, Create a WordPress Website.

By the day of WordCamp I will have posted up to Step 8, so the other two steps will be a big reveal.

I encourage all of my WordPress Workshoppers and private tutees to attend WordCamp Vancouver, and without fear. It’s not as geeky as you think. Sure, there are a lot of sessions that will be over your head, but also many that will be at eye level.

Customizer-ing Theme Options: A visual playground.
Since WordPress themes are the visual face of a site, it goes without saying that its options should be visual too. Drew James’ talk covers leveraging the Customizer API as a way to provide users with a visual playground when configuring their theme.

Wes DeBoer: How To Manage Relationships Between Custom Post Types
Mike Schroder: Working with Images the WordPress Way.

Can WordPress really do that? Take 2
A case study of how Morten Rand-Hendrickson took a site that cannot be described as anything other than a complete disaster and resurrected it with the help of WordPress.
(This session is in the same time slot as mine, so I hope I get some attendance.)

Getting Started with WooCommerce
There’s been a lot of talk that WordPress is not a good platform for e-commerce. With the introduction of the WooCommerce plugin, that is rapidly changing. Merril Mayer will show how to set up a basic install, manage settings and add categories and products.

Two must have development plugins
Increase productivity and development workflow with Custom Post Types UI and Advanced Custom fields. Jaffe Worley will demonstrate how to integrate the two and how to implement their usage on the front end. These plugins are meant for the beginner to the experienced developer.

WordPress on the iPad: Blogging, Maintaining, Doing it all Mobile
Tris Hussey has spent the last three years refining workflows, tools, and apps to go from idea to blog post all on an iPad and I want to share what I’ve learned with everyone so they can blog anywhere, anytime.

How to optimize your blog for mobile traffic
Steve Zussiono will show how to move your website to make it fast to load; examples of simple mobile navigation; options in WordPress to create a mobile theme; examples of websites that work well for a mobile audience.
