WordCamp is coming to Vancouver on Saturday, October 13th!

WordCamp Vancouver is happening at a good time, coming as it does in advance of the release of WordPress Version 5 – Gutenberg – the biggest innovation to WordPress since the development of nested menus.
Attendees will enjoy two sessions to learn about Gutenberg: Gutenberg with Eoin O’Dwyer, and Just enough React: Getting ready for Gutenberg with Shannon Smith. But you know people will be talking all day about this built-in page builder.
Vancouver’s own Morten Rand-Hendriksen will present the keynote: Some thoughts on WordPress, the Web, and Everything Else. I wonder if that will include fish.

I volunteered again for WordCamp and this year my job was to organize the after party. How did I get so lucky?
But, I didn’t get started until early this month and much to my chagrin, I found that my first-choice venues were already booked.
I wanted a cool but funky downtown location with a private-ish room and a good beer list, delicious food and a hip atmosphere. I wanted WordCampers, having been sequestered all day, to have some exposure to local Vancouverites and our city’s storied past.
After searching and searching, I was just starting to despair about my late timing and modest budget when I remembered…
The Railway Club!
Only it’s no longer the dingy old Railway Club, Vancouver’s longest continually operating nightclub – 1932-2016 – that started as the membership-only 7 Railwayman’s Club for CPR workers, and where Los Lobos, The Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo, and Barenaked Ladies have all played.
Now it’s the Railway Stage and Beer Cafe operated by the Donnelly Group. And while the decor is dramatically improved and the beer menu expanded, the club has retained its old-timey atmosphere, artsy clientele and rustic vibe. Perfect!
There is a game room way in the back where WordCampers can converse over hors d’oeuvres and drinks and play a game of billiards or darts. Each attendee receives a free drink ticket.
At 9pm the music starts in the front of the house and we’re all invited to the show!
On the bill that night are purveyors of greasy rock n’ roll, Cobra Ramone, and the darkly cinematic The Deep Cove .
So you can talk WordPress all day long, and drink and dance all night long. What a deal!
